Turning a complex product system into an interactive 3D experience

Rebuilding a complex product-selection process as an interactive 3D experience designed to make configuration clearer, more visual, and easier to understand.
TruckVault products are highly configurable, but that flexibility creates a communication challenge: customers need to understand fit, finishes, accessories, and product combinations before committing to a build. The configurator translated those choices into a real-time 3D experience while establishing a scalable production pipeline for future models and variants.

Context
The product was configurable. The experience wasn't.
TruckVault builds storage systems with a high degree of configuration. Drawer layouts, vehicle applications, finishes, accessories, dimensions, and product combinations can change substantially from one build to the next.
That flexibility is a strength of the product, but it creates a communication problem. Static photography and conventional product pages can show individual configurations, but they cannot easily help a customer understand how all of those decisions come together before the product is built.

Strategy
Make configuration visible.
The answer was not simply to create more renders. The experience needed to let customers see configuration decisions as they made them.
The strategy was to build a real-time 3D system that connected product logic with visual feedback. Instead of asking customers to mentally assemble options from separate images and descriptions, the configurator could show the product taking shape around their selections.
That meant solving two problems at once: create a clear customer-facing experience and establish a production system capable of supporting an expanding catalog of 3D assets.
System
Build the pipeline, not just the model.
A configurator at this scale could not depend on one-off asset preparation. The 3D content needed consistent rules for geometry, materials, naming, optimization, export, and runtime behavior.
The workflow standardized how assets moved from source geometry through material preparation, optimization, export, and validation so future models and variants could enter the system predictably.
Execution
From system to experience.
With the production framework established, the work shifted from building isolated assets to assembling a coherent interactive product experience. Models, materials, variants, and configuration logic could now function as parts of the same system.
Outcome
A reusable system, not a one-off experience.
The result is more than a set of 3D product models. The configurator is supported by a reusable production framework designed to accommodate new products, material variations, configuration logic, and continued expansion.
